The Black and White deserts are spectacular and well worth a trip. The Black Desert in the Bahariya Depression features rough 'organ pipe' basalt formations on top of craggy hills and the combination of this with great sand drifts is wonderful. The White Desert is probably the most beautiful scenery in Egypt. It is in the Farafra Depression and is pale white and cream formations of calcium carbonate, left behind from the bottom of the sea aeons ago. Crystal Mountain is on the ridge between the two depressions, and calcite crystals burst from the ground. The area is somewhat damaged by too many tourists - please do not break anything.
